Marriage

CLEM: “It’s so funny. Jean-Marc doesn’t even realize I have a crush on him.”

ME: “You have a crush on Jean-Marc? What does that mean?”

CLEM: “It means I want to marry him.”

ME: “Really?”

CLEM: “I’m sad though because he wants to marry Grace.”

ME: “On no!”

CLEM: “Baxter wants to marry Grace too.”

ME: (sigh) “You’ll find going through life that often all the guys like the same girls.”

CLEM: “I told Baxter and Jean-Marc that I wanted to marry Grace too but Baxter said I couldn’t because she’s a girl. Can a girl marry a girl?”

ME: “Sure. In our country a girl can marry a girl.”

CLEM: “Can a boy marry a boy?”

ME: “Yup. In Canada a boy can marry a boy too.”

CLEM: “Can a boy marry a girl?”

ME: “In our country pretty much anyone who is in love and wants to get married can go ahead and get married.”

CLEM: (thinks about this for a while). “That seems fair.”
